Meet Joe Cox: Your Friendly Neighborhood Plumber (Knoxville, TN)

If you’ve ever called Friendly Neighborhood Plumber and met Joe, you probably noticed it right away…

He’s not just there to fix something.
He’s there to connect, explain, and make the whole situation feel a little less stressful.

But Joe didn’t just wake up one day and become a plumber.

His story is a little more… all over the place.

“Where are you from?”

If you ask Joe where he’s from, he will say Orlando, Florida.

And if you ask, where in Orlando?

He will say a little all over.

He went to 12 different schools.
New place. New people. New start.
Over and over again.

And somewhere along the way, he picked up something that stuck with him…

When you’re constantly the new kid, you learn fast that connection matters.

And one of the easiest ways to connect?
Make someone smile.

So that’s what he did.

New school, new faces… he’d find a way to break the ice.
A joke, a goofy comment, something to make people laugh and feel comfortable.

Because if you can make people smile, you can turn a completely unfamiliar place into something that feels a little more like home.

And that never left him.

That’s Joe Cox.

Goofy in the best way.
Quick with a joke.
The kind of person who can walk into a stressful situation… and somehow make it feel lighter.

Knoxville became home

His family made the move to Knoxville his junior year.

He finished out his last two years at Bearden High School, and that’s where things started to settle down a bit.

But the work ethic? That had already been built.

Joe has always been a go-getter.

School wasn’t his thing… learning was

Joe will tell you himself, he wasn’t a “school person.”

Reading didn’t come easy. It was frustrating.

But then he found audiobooks.

And everything changed.

Now?
You’ll catch him listening to:

  • business and leadership books

  • self-development

  • mindset and growth

And on long drives…
it’s usually Harry Potter playing while him and Abi are quoting it back and forth.

How plumbing came into the picture

Joe got into plumbing before COVID.

At first, it was learning the basics…
then it turned into something more.

He got hooked on:

  • how systems work

  • learning codes

  • understanding how everything connects

It wasn’t just a job.
It clicked.

Where “Friendly Neighborhood Plumber” started

Before there was a company… there was just Joe helping people.

Answering questions on Facebook.
Giving advice.
Helping neighbors figure things out.

And every time, he’d sign off the same way:

“Your Friendly Neighborhood Plumber”

At the time, it was just a phrase.

Now… it’s the name on the truck.

The moment things shifted

Joe didn’t wait around for opportunities. He created them.

He started picking up side jobs. Helping people. Staying busy.
And people kept calling him back.
Telling their neighbors.
Trusting him.

That’s when it clicked.

This wasn’t just side work.
This could actually be something.

So in January 2023, Joe and Abi decided to go all in.

And just a few months later, life got really real.

In April, their youngest daughter Lyla was born early. There were complications, and Abi was in the hospital... a lot.

So Joe stepped into everything at once.

He quit his full time job.

Started running a brand new business.
Caring for a newborn.
Showing up for the older girls.

There was no pause button. No time to slow down. Just doing what needed to be done, one day at a time.

He built his life around being a dad first. Late nights, early mornings, moving between jobs and hospital visits, making sure everyone was taken care of.

It wasn’t easy.

But it shaped everything.

Because from the very beginning, this business was never just about plumbing.

It was about building something steady for their family.

Today at Friendly Neighborhood Plumber

Joe and Abi don’t just run it… it’s part of their everyday life.

From the early mornings to the late-night calls, from answering phones to being out in the field, it’s all hands on deck. Their kids see it, hear it, and grow up right alongside it. They know what it means to help, to show up, and to take care of people.

This isn’t just a job they clock in and out of.

It’s something they’ve built together.
Something they’ve grown through.
Something that’s woven into their home and their family.

And no matter how much it grows, or how busy things get…

Every call, every job, every customer still comes back to the same idea Joe started with:

Just help your neighbors.

When Joe’s not working…

When Joe does slow down for a minute, you’ll usually find him doing something that still keeps him moving.

He’s probably in the kitchen experimenting with some new recipe… sometimes it turns out great, sometimes it’s just part of the process.
Or he’s out hiking, finding a new trail and seeing where it leads.
If the weather’s nice, there’s a good chance he’s on his longboard or out running with the dogs, just getting outside and clearing his head.

And then there are the quieter moments.

Sitting down with the girls, playing chess, talking through moves, laughing, and slowly teaching them how to beat him.

(He’ll tell you he’s teaching them… but they’re catching on faster than he’d like.)

The part people don’t always see

Joe will be the first to tell you…

His path hasn’t been easy.

He grew up with a lot of challenges and adversity.

But instead of letting that stop him, it shaped how he shows up for people now.

He understands what it feels like when things aren’t easy.

Which is why he works the way he does.

At the end of the day

Joe’s not trying to be the biggest company in town.

He just wants to be the one people trust.

The one who shows up.
The one who explains things.
The one who helps.

And no matter how much things grow…

That part hasn’t changed.
